The Deepwater Guard (DWG) are the weakest and generally first Faction encountered by the player in Quest for Neter. The faction is composed of five loosely aligned Pirate Lords, carving out a miniature empire in Erick and Janwall. They make use of an assortment of ramshackle yet deadly wooden ships, planes, and airships.

Pirate Lord Goldwater

Orson Goldwater is a Janwalli salesman, and owner of a ship-making company spurred on by a sudden influx of pirates. Those pirates who cannot pay upfront for houseboats are conscripted into Goldwater's militia. Goldwater also handles the Deepwater Guard's finances when warring with other factions. Goldwater specializes in watercraft, mostly converted civilian vessels but also some militarized mercenary craft.

Pirate Lord Pathos

Lord Pathos is a disgraced Steel Strider shipwright banished to Erwick. He escaped to Janwall and used deceit, theft, and murder to climb up to the top of the pirate hierarchy. From his experience designing Steel Striders ships, Pathos fashions relatively conventional-looking pirate warships.

He also owns a pet gibbon named Mr. Socks.

Pirate Lord Riker

Richard "Riker" Redbeard is a legendary buccaneer and crazed mechanic turned salvage company owner who steals from the poor and gives to the even poorer. He breaks apart donated (stolen) ships and aircraft, sells the scrap, and uses the best parts left over to build functional, artful warships.

Riker's ships are brutal, scrappy, and subtly animalistic, tending to use harpoons and melee weapons.

Pirate Lord Fitzgerald

Randolph Fitzgerald is an elderly kindhearted tinkerer who originally hoped his "Coffin Nail" airships would deliver letters and gifts to people below. Such plans were dashed by his son and caretaker, who realized the potency of Randolph's creations and converted them into weapons of war.

Fitzgerald's craft can be divided into conventional planes, the balloon corps, and crazy contraptions.

Pirate Lord Sven Kno

Sven Kno is a Janwalli engineer, looking to reinstate the glory of the old Janwalli Trade Empire. His airships are inspired by old books' depictions of Janwalli warships.

Sven Kno's airships tend to be long and slender, often packing large broadside armaments or turrets.

Design

The deepwater guard are not particularly rich, technologically advanced, or sane. Their designs are generally ramshackle and made of wood, with metal reinforcing the hull as a skeleton or used as extra protection in sensitive compartments. They make extensive use of CRAM cannons and unguided missiles, while some more advanced ships will mount Advanced cannons.

Despite their ramshackle construction, however, Deepwater Guard vehicles are still deadly, especially against unprepared opponents. Large volumes of shells, CRAM Cannons, and missiles will devastate those who do not mount a competent defence.
